The London Bus That Goes to Slough

Image
The 81 is a London bus (operated by TfL) which goes from Hounslow, in West London, to Slough which is over 4 miles outside the Greater London boundary. This makes it the London bus route that travels the furthest west with second place being the 117, 203, 216 and 290 which terminate at Staines Bus Station. The 81s western most bus stop (and westernmost TfL stop) is called Queensmere Centre and is the first stop after leaving Slough Bus Station. Slough The 81 starts its journey towards Hounslow at Slough Bus Station using stop 1. Slough Bus Station consists of 17 stops with 1-10 inside the bus

Paddington Station

Image
London Paddington station is one of London's major termini with trains to Bristol, Cardiff, Cornwall and the west. Actually facing firmly north-west, Paddington is the gateway to the west country with services run by GWR (Great Western Railway) using its 800/802s for long distance journeys and its 387s for shorter distance journeys. Paddington station also serves the Heathrow Express for direct trains to Heathrow, and TfL Rail for slower (and cheaper) journeys to Heathrow and the stopping services to Reading. 22/02/2022 and Palindromic Dates

Image
Today 22/02/2022 is a palindrome (in dd/mm/yyyy format). Palindromes are fascinating because of the intrinsic beauty in reflections. However today is only a palindrome in the widely but not exclusively used day/month/year format with there being no month 22 in the month/day/year format used by illogical people and the USA. It is also not a palindrome in the yyyy/mm/dd format used by computer scientists all over the globe. 22/02/2022 is a palindrome when fully written out but fails at being one when you remove leading zeros. It is also not a palindrome when you remove the century we're in as it becomes 22/02/22. But interestingly if we remove both leading zeros and the century, we're le

What Was the Marble Arch Mound

Image
The Marble Arch Mound was a temporary structure which closed on 9th January 2022 after opening on 26th July 2021. It was a viewing platform 25 metres in the sky made possible by an artificial hill covered in green sedum turf and a few trees. With everything supported by a vast amount of scaffolding. Climbing the mound initially had a fee which started at £4.50 but this was later removed due to its controversy and being named “London's Worst Tourist Attraction”. Controversy and Costs

The London Trams (Croydon Trams)

Image
London's Tram network spans from Wimbledon in the west through Croydon to termini at Beckenham Junction, Elmers End, and New Addington. The system opened in 2000 with 38 stops and in the almost 22 years since then the only new addition has been Centrale. Currently services operate as three lines with the first running between Wimbledon and Beckenham Junction, the second between Wimbledon and Elmers End, and last running from New Addington through the Croydon loop and back to New Addington (with the destination from New Addington given as West Croydon). The Reservoirs Around London

Image
Reservoirs house the supply of water that is going to become potable (safe for us to drink) and with London's population (over 9 million people) and businesses the city needs a lot of water. This water comes from the numerous reservoirs around the city with them mostly concentrated in two areas, the first is around the Thames, just west of Greater London, and the other is around the River Lea, along its length through and beyond London. Whilst London has many reservoirs you might have never seen one (or noticed that you've seen one) this is because the edges are just large grass slopes. This means the only indication that you're travelling next to one is an oddly uniform steep grass hill (which is usually populated by sheep).

Things The City Of London Owns Outside the City

Image
The City Of London (also known as the square mile) is a small city inside Greater London and contains many of the famous London landmarks like St Pauls, the Gherkin, the Walkie Talkie, and the Cheesegrater. The City is very very old with the first residents of “Londinium” (as it was called) arriving in 43 AD. The City Of London Corporation owns the City Of London as well as 16 times the area of the city in green spaces in and around Greater London. Green Space in the City At only 1.12 square miles there is not much space f

London’s Weekend Only 24 Hour Bus Routes

Image
You probably know that London has many night buses with the "N" prefix and also many 24 hour bus routes which run all day everyday (except Christmas Day). But like the night Tube a few bus routes run on Friday nights/Saturday mornings and Saturday nights/Sunday mornings as well as normally during the day. This means that there is no 24 hour service on weekday nights so these buses are given the 24 hour weekend badge on bus stops and diagrams.

The Millennium Dome (The O2)

Image
Opened on the 31st December 1999, for the Millennium the following day, the Millennium Dome was going to be a temporary exhibition for the year 2000. But it is still here, renamed The O2, and houses a shopping destination and an arena with a 20,000 person capacity. The Millennium As the dome was created for the Millennium it has some date/time based properties. This includes: the diameter of the dome being 365 metres for the length of a year, there being 12 yellow tall structural towers for the months in a year (with them also in a clock like circle), and also the maximum height of the main dom

All the Modes of Transport Operated by TfL

Image
TfL is a massive establishment which controls many different modes of transport in London including some obscure operations like streets and dial-a-ride. Buses TfL operates almost all of the buses in London with them controlling and tendering contracts for each individual route. The operators have some control in the services run like the seat moquette and type of bus. But TfL, in order to keep a consistent image, forces the buses to be; painted red, have various disability improvements (including the onboard displays), the cost being the same (currently £1.55),

The 5 IKEA'S in London

Image
IKEA is a well known cheap Swedish furniture shop and is famous for its meatballs. IKEA has 5 (proper large) stores in and slightly around London, and I have been to all of them. They are all located (except Lakeside) in the middle of Outer London, mostly in industrial or shopping estates. In fact almost 1 in 4 of IKEA'S 21 UK stores are in London. The locations are listed in order from the closest to Trafalgar Square to the furthest. Greenwich
